How Does Digital Printing on Cushion Fabric Work?

Our specialist digital printing process is something we are very proud of. It allows us to flawlessly print your designs deep into the fibres of your chosen fabric. This creates a vibrant and permanent print that will not rub off or fade away. Every individual fabric has a slightly different finish and structure. Therefore, you can expect different print finishes. Some of the fabrics, such as the natural cottons, have a beautiful, slightly muted print that adds to the rustic charms of this lively textile. Others, such as silk sensation, deliver a punchy and bold print. The different compositions all have their own unique charms, base tones and yarns, so have fun getting to know each one and seeing which will be best for your cushion project. 

Depending on how you use to use your cushion fabric, you can choose from 3 different edge finishes. Each is expertly stitched by our team of skilled seamstresses:

  • As it comes. We roughly cut around your image, leaving a simple scissor cut (perhaps uneven white fabric border).
  • Hem with thread. We can hem your fabric with a choice of black or white thread. Please allow 1-2 days additional production time. See below for information on how hemming affects the size of your print.
  • Cut on the line. We neatly and precisely cut on the edge of your image.

You most likely will choose not to have your fabric hemmed, if you are using it to make cushions, however, if you do it is important to bear these measurements in mind:

  • Light fabrics: we use 6-8mm in the hem (2 fold), so your width/height will be minus 12-16mm
  • Medium fabrics that fray: we use 15-20mm in the hem (2 fold) so your width/height will be minus 35-40mm
  • Stiff/heavy/no-fray fabrics: we use 15-20mm in the hem (1 fold) so width/height will be minus 35-40mm

How to Care for Your Cushion Fabric

Every individual fabric requires its own degree of care, but they are generally very easy to look after. To ensure they always look their best, we generally recommend a cold and delicate wash, if you want to put them in a washing machine cycle. Some are hardier than others, and for naturals, such as 100% silk, we recommend a specialist dry cleaner. Hot washing at anything above 30°c could cause colour fading. Natural cotton options (like all natural cottons) have some degree of shrinkage in the printing process. Please accept 2-3 % shrinkage in the X and Y directions. To compensate, we suggest to allow a margin of shrinking in your design. Do this by adding more bleed area in your design.
